by Duncan MacLeodDuncan MacLeod (1872–1957) was a Scottish-Canadian missionary who wrote this celebrated account of Taiwan, which heavily features George Leslie Mackay, another Scottish-Canadian who is perhaps the most famous Westerner in the island's history. MacLeod has a wry turn of phrase and a keen sense of observation, and while his religious sensibilities blind him to much that is good in the population, he has a generous appreciation of the natural beauty of Taiwan and the spirit of its people.
